A CEO’s look into their company, employees, and marketing

This weekend I had a chance to reflect on many things about my business. My reflection came as I was attending a “get together” with some of our employees and our CFO.

I was being introduced as “so and so this is my boss Jeff”, it’s funny to me after a statement like that how the person your being introduced to demeanor changes quickly and they stand a little straighter and their vocabulary suddenly changes.

You see this employee in particular had recently left her job to come work for me full-time. I could see the excitement and new energy in her eyes. She was telling everyone there about it. I even had the chance to speak with her mom about how excited she was.

So I started to reflect heavily. I have an obligation as CEO to every employee that works for me and our CFO to make sure we are consistently creating new business opportunities so that those employees can feed their families.

Every CEO has this obligation to run their business correctly, this includes marketing your company.

It makes no sense if you’re not going to market your business (which I have met owners and CEO’s that don’t) to have employees working for you. It is not fair to your bottom line and it is not fair to their families they provide for.

It’s not good enough to put up a website (more than 56 million websites exist online) and sit back and wait for the business to roll in because it won’t. It’s not enough to have a retail space and swing the doors open and wait for a flood of foot traffic because they won’t come. It’s not enough period.

You must for the success of that business and it’s employees to market your business. At my firm Artifx Media Inc. a lot of my clients have come from just that, they have opened a business but haven’t tried to market. I applaud them for taking an active role to succeed.

We all have things we are good at and things we are not. I’m not good at changing the oil in my car I just don’t have the time so I would rather pay an expert at Jiffy Lube to do it for me. The same thing applies to your marketing.

If you don’t have the time or the background in marketing, hire an expert in the field. The best show on TV in my opinion is CBS’s Undercover Boss, this show is great, CEO’s go undercover in their own companies to get in touch with the employees and see the flaws in their processes. It forces them to see how important their company is to the employees they hired.

Wouldn’t you want to succeed for your staff? Nike albeit a large company hires out their marketing to advertising firms. Why you may ask? In the most simplest of terms they make shoes and apparel on a daily basis they are excellent at it.

Ad firms do marketing daily for businesses large and small and they are excellent at it.
